City Alerts Public to National Dogbite Prevention Week
Millions of dog-loving Americans know of the many joys that a well-trained and socialized dog can bring to our lives.But for millions of Americans, the interactions are less positive; every year, dogs bite an estimated 4.7 million people, ranging from minor nips to major attacks. Experts believe that public education can help prevent these bites. That is why Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control, is reminding citizens to review dog bite prevention tips with family members during National Dog Bite Prevention Week, May 21-27.Each year, 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites; half of these are children. Of those injured, 386,000 require treatment in an emergency department and about a dozen die. Although national statistics show that the rate of dog bite-related injuries is highest for children ages 5 to 9 years, with the rate decreasing as children age, Fort Wayne statistics show adults as the most likely victim. In fact, adults were the victims in 49% of Fort Wayne 2005 animal bite cases, while children under the age of 11 were the victims in 22% of 2005 animal bite cases. The reverse statistic in Fort Wayne is attributed to the pro-active animal bite education targeting children in Fort Wayne.
