- Attempts have been made to insert man made materials into the hair follicles to simulate normal hair. These methods are almost always unsuccessful.

- They often become infected and the artificial hair falls out within a
 few weeks. The only treatment is to remove all the synthetic hair. Reconstruction with hair transplants cannot occur for about three to six months.

- Examination of the wounds under the microscope shows scarring and thinning of the scalp with inflammation (foreign body reaction).
- These methods have mostly been discarded in favor of more natural methods of hair transplantation.
