The authors describe tissue expansion to treat male pattern baldness. They used expansion at the same time as scalp-reduction procedures and pedicle hair-bearing flaps. They believe that the major advantage of tissue expansion in the treatment of baldness is that it generates new hair-bearing scalp. Another advantage is that the increased blood supply which occurs during expansion allows safe and predictable flaps. They found the disadvantages of expansion to include the need for two or more surgical procedures and multiple office visits. There is also a significant cosmetic defect as the expanders become larger. The complications included infection, extrusion, deflation, and hair loss.
