Tissue expanders to treat male pattern baldness

Tissue expanders can be used to provide tissue to close central areas of the scalp. When combined with scalp reduction (excision) and flaps, large areas can be corrected.

The density of the hair follicles does decrease in the expanded scalp but the overall number of hairs is not reduced.

Apart from the need for multiple operations, the most significant disadvantage is the often bizarre appearance of the expanders during treatment. This makes the technique suitable only for the most motivated individual.
