The authors believe that congenital ear deformities are found in half of babies at birth. For many deformities of shape nonsurgical correction is very easy and reliable. They observed the natural changes in 1000 babies' ear shapes for a year and found that 84% of these deformities disappeared during the first year of life. The deformities were present in 7 per cent of the 1000 babies at 1 year of age.
However, the percentage of protruding ears increased from 0.4 per cent at birth to 5.5 per cent at 1 year of age. This suggests that many protruding ears are acquired after birth. They feel that if a baby is placed on its back, the weight of the baby's head will fold the ear forward when the baby turns its head to one side. This is the mechanism which they feel is the probable cause for the acquired protruding ear.
