The ear has a number of convolutions and folds. These folds are caused by the underlying skeleton of cartilage which is covered by skin. The rim of the ear is called the helix and the fold closer to the center of the ear is the antihelical fold. In a protruding ear the antihelical fold is often underdeveloped. The shell shaped part of the ear is called the concha and in protruding ears is often overdeveloped. In many cases a pinback otoplasty will correct both these areas. The size of the adult ear is surprisingly constant, the height of the ear being just under twice as long as the width.
