- RHINOPLASTY
- surgery in cocaine users
Cocaine users are at special risk during rhinoplasty because the lining of the nose may have been damaged by the cocaine which causes intense constriction of blood vessels.
Unfortunately the surgeon is not always aware of the patients's cocaine use and as a result surgery may be performed that can lead to serious problems.
Before surgery the surgeon may be able to recognize some changes in the nose such as perforations, inflammation and necrosis which suggest cocaine use. If so surgery on the nose and particularly the septum should be avoided.
Complications associated with cocaine users who have a rhinoplasty include collapse of the septum, slow healing and failure to correct a twisted septum.
If you are considering a rhinoplasty and you use or have used cocaine regularly, you must tell your surgeon or you risk significant problems
