- rhinoplasty in teenagers
Rhinoplasty in the early teenage years may prevent years of emotional distress. In the past it was felt that surgery should not be performed until at least sixteen because it might interfere with the growth and shape of the nose.
We now know that surgery can be performed in most girls by thirteen or fourteen and boys a year or so later without causing any problems.
At some time most adolescents dislike an area of their body and the nose may well be such an area. However, if the dislike for the nose is consistent and there is objective evidence of a large nose then rhinoplasty may be indicated.
The surgeon must be certain that there is no pressure from the family or friends and that the patient is mature enough both physically and mentally for the operation.
The emotional benefits of early surgery before the body image is fully formed are now well recognized and about one in ten rhinoplasties are performed on teenagers.
