- Many patients have difficulty breathing before they have a rhinoplasty. This is often thought to be due to a deviated or twisted septum, the cartilage strut or sheet that separates the right and left nostril. However we know that about three out of four people may have some deviation of the septum.
- Unless severe, the condiction may not be as important as was once thought. Some insurance companies will pay for straightening of the septum if it is felt to interfere with breathing.
If the deviation is severe surgery may help to correct the problem. There are two operations used to straighten the area. One removes part of the cartilage and is called a submucous resection. The other, a septoplasty, attempts to straighten the cartilage.
