For several years some doctors have tried to treat heavy scar with silicone sheets.
It is not clear how they work but may simply be that they increase the amount of water in the scar. They seem to be effective in many hypertrophic scars and may help some keloid scars.
The disadvantages include difficulty getting the material to stick to the skin and skin reactions like rashes and breakdown. For this reason it is sometimes difficult to get patients to use the material long enough to get a good result. An alternative which some patients find effective is to use sheets of mineral oil.
If you are having difficulty finding a source for oil and silicone sheets we have a page which lists the suppliers.
