The authors performed a double blind trial to see if topical anaesthetic cream (EMLA cream) before local anaesthetic decreases the discomfort of surgery for prominent ears under local anaesthetic. The patients acted as their own controls, one ear had EMLA cream two hours before surgery, and the other an aqueous cream. After surgery they were asked about the amount of pain they had felt in each ear, at the time of injection and during the surgery. They were also asked if the inconvenience of using EMLA cream was worth any improvement. The study showed that EMLA cream decreased the pain felt at the time of injection and during the surgery. About two out of three patients felt it was worth the inconvenience.
