- LASERS
- How does a laser work on human tissue?
The laser is a highly focussed beam of light . When it reacts with human tissue it produces intense heat. There is nothing magical about what the laser does but many patients are mislead by reports of almost magical effects. When reading such reports it helps to remember that the laser is acting to produce heat and burn the tissue. Although this is in a very focussed way.
- The doctor must direct the beam of laser light to exactly the right place. If it hits tissue which was not planned, serious damage can occur. As with all resurfacing procedures complications can occur using the laser.
- When the laser beam reaches the tissue its energy is absorbed by the cell. This causes the cell to rapidly heat up. Water is lost and the cells destroyed.
- The amount of heat produced depends on how much energy is absorbed. This is related to the amount of water in the cell, the cell's pigment type and the wavelength of the laser (the type of laser).
