- Soybean oil filled breast implants
- When silicone gel implants were withdrawn from the American market in 1992 the only generally used implant was the saline filled implant. This implant is by no means perfect and so research extended into alternative materials.
- One alternative implant is the Trilucent implant which is filled with soybean oil. This implant has an outer shell of silicone and is filled with a highly refined triglyceride fat called Trilipid Z6. This implant was used in other parts of the world.
Studies show that over 90% of patients are satisfied with these implants. A major advantage is that it is easier for X-rays to penetrate the implant and better mammograms may be possible.
Other problems such as wrinkling and capsule formation are similar to saline filled implants.
- Suggested complications include a change in the oil causing rancidity and a body odor.
- In the United States saline filled implants are the implant in general use. Other implants, including soy, are still in the research stage and may not be generally available. Many surgeons feel that silicone gel implants represent the best method of breast enlargement.
