This study reviewed the insertion of silicone malar (cheek) implants in sixty-four patients. In 4 out of 5 patients the malar augmentation was performed at the same time as other procedures. The implants were placed in a subperiosteal pocket through either the intraoral, subciliary, or preauricular approach. The authors feel a good result is obtained and there are few complications. Infection is rare and malpositioning is infrequent. They feel that fixation sutures are unnecessary. Their most common problem was improper size selection. Patient satisfaction was high judged by the fact that no patient had permanent removal of a malar silicone implant once it was inserted.
