Heavy scars or keloids are common among people with african ancestry. For a true keloid former there is no good treatment but hypertrophic scars which appear very similar can often be improved with scar revision. This often means removing the scar and trying to repair it in such a way as to make an improvement in its appearance. As a rule of thumb, following a scar revision there is a 90% chance the scar will be better, 9% it will be about the same and 1% that it could be worse.
For patients who form heavier scars operations must be modified to keep scars as short and hidden as possible.
