Authors: Baker DC; Conley J
Plast Reconstr Surg, 64: 6, 1979 Dec, 781-95The article says that injury to the facial nerve in rhytidectomy occurs in less than one percent of cases, and that spontaneous return of function occurs in more than 80 percent of these within 6 months. It warns that newer and more aggressive techniques of platysmal and subplatysmal flaps and SMAS dissections increases the risk of injury to facial nerve branches. The article discusses the detailed anatomy of the branches of the facial nerve and how to prevent injuries to them during a facelift.
