MARRIAGE & COUPLE COACHING FOR PHYSICIAN FAMILIES

While it is not true that doctors have a higher divorce rate than the general population, they are less happy in their marriages. A recent study showed that “divorce among physicians is less common than among non-healthcare workers and several health professions”1. Women doctors do have a  higher prevalence of divorce than male physicians, possibly due to the effect of the hours worked.

Marital difficulties can increase the possibility of career dissatisfaction and burnout and  increases the risk that physicians and their spouses will experience depression, drug abuse, suicide, alcoholism, and other emotional and psychiatric problems. Physicians and their spouse or partner also experience the issues that any couple can experience, like sexual dysfunction or communication problems. In addition, they must cope with the stress imposed by the modern practice of medicine.

When physicians and their partners are not getting along, everyone suffers and the result can be devastating. It is sometimes assumed that physicians long work hours cause marital problems but the truth is that their excessive work is often caused by their desire to escape troubles at home. Marital difficulties often increase career dissatisfaction and burnout which in turn can lead to depression, anxiety and excessive use of alcohol or other drugs.

Dr. Hudson is available  for marriage, relationship and couple coaching for physicians and their families. He has special expertise in working with physicians, dentists, nurses, healthcare workers and their partners.  Before opening his office for coaching he had  over  40 years experience in medicine and  mental health counseling and he is uniquely qualified to help physicians. He has  special certification and training in the management of anger and completed Level I Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and has extensive experience as a marriage therapist. He is Albuquerque’s only authorized Gottman Seven Principles Program Educator.

Coaching for Physicians also offers marathon coaching for individual couples. We can schedule appointments for Marathon coaching either at Dr. Hudson’s farm in Cedar Grove, Santa Fe, NM or his uptown office location in Albuquerque.  For an additional fee and expenses, Dr. Hudson will come to you and provide one-on-one, confidential marathon coaching intensives in your home, office or other location. In marathon coaching  individuals meet one-on-one with Dr. Hudson for 5 hours a day and for 1-3 consecutive days and stay overnight at a nearby hotel or bed and breakfast (we can help you make arrangements). Each individual or couple has a unique schedule that is worked out in advance. Marathon coaching is especially useful for physician clients who cannot attend weekly coaching sessions and need to travel from distant locations. It provides a brief, intensive and focused approach to your coaching issues and is designed to help you learn new skills in less time.

Dr. Hudson’s aim as a coach is to guide you to restore meaning and purpose to your relationship. As  a physician for over 40 years he understands the unique needs of medical doctors and their spouses and partners. Dr. Hudson is available for couple coaching for same-sex relationships and marriages. He does not work with children nor does he do marriage counseling, family therapy or psychotherapy of any kind.   He has experience with a range of assessments suitable for couple coaching including the Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) .

In western society around two out of three first marriages are unsuccessful and three out of four second marriages fail. With couples coaching before and during a marriage you can do something to enrich your relationship and increase the odds of a long and loving relationship. No one goes into a marriage expecting to get a divorce so do not let it happen to you. He has a special interest in helping couples who have no traditional religious affiliation and he works  from an existential perspective.

Despite the best of intentions a divorce is sometimes inevitable.  Dr. Hudson works as a coach with both physicians or their spouses to help them through this difficult time.  He is also available as part of a cooperative or collaborative divorce team.
