Hypopigmentation (decrease in skin color) following phenol peels is probably due to an interference with the function of pigment cells or melanocytes in the skin.

check sourceMicroscope studies show that melanocytes are present in normal numbers after a phenol peel.

Patients who have occupational exposure to phenol by inhaling it also have hypopigmentation of the skin. This suggests that the effect of phenol on skin pigment is a result of interference with cell function. It is not because of loss of cells due to direct contact with the phenol.
