A study of phenol peels in eleven middle-aged white women who during face lifts after 1.5 to 20 years had biopsies of the area between the peeled and unpeeled skin. A new band of connective tissue 2 to 3 mm in width was laid down just below the epidermis. Fine elastic fibers formed a dense network in this band of regenerated collagen. Many abnormalities of sun-damaged epidermis were also corrected. The melanocytes were not eliminated, but melanin synthesis was impaired.
